More than one decade ago, the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SETRUST) purchased a fleet of mobile medical carts to run their patient administration system. As their digital needs grew, they began a Trust-wide initiative called Encompass to implement a comprehensive electronic patient record (EPR) system to support more efficient data access and workflows. The Trust needed a variety of mobile point-of-care workstations to bring this technology into a wide range of care areas, especially as staff were adopting more electronic processes and workstreams. As members of the Confidentiality Advisory Group, SETRUST was well-versed in best practices for this project and knew that multiple styles of mobile carts, including ones that supported dual monitors, would be important for viewing detailed patient data and imagery within the new EPR system. Working with Hospital Services Limited (previously Ergoviewing), a highly engaged and customer-focused reseller, SETRUST looked to Ergotron’s broad portfolio and selected the StyleView Laptop Cart and StyleView Cart with LCD Pivot. As former Ergotron customers, they knew about Ergotron’s reputation for quality and ability to meet unique needs across sites and departments. “The dual screens facilitate quick and easy access to all the relevant clinical information I need on a ward round. The mobile workstations are reliable and have excellent battery life, allowing me to focus on the patient rather than the technology.” ~ David WilsonChief Clinical Information Officer SETRUST implemented the versatile carts across all clinical areas at multiple locations, including the emergency department, theatres, medical and surgical wards, higher dependency units and intensive care units. “The dual screens facilitate quick and easy access to all the relevant clinical information I need on a ward round,” said Chief Clinical Information Officer David Wilson about the SV Dual Monitor Kit accessory on the carts. “The mobile workstations are reliable and have excellent battery life, allowing me to focus on the patient rather than the technology. Overall, they have improved the quality of my daily ward rounds since their introduction.” Other SETRUST sites like the teaching hospital in Belfast appreciate the ability to accommodate an all-in-one computer. When several people need to view the same information at once, a large monitor on a mobile cart is critical. Many locations also use Ergotron monitor arms for comfortable typing and screensharing with patients in clinics and exam rooms. Together, these professional-grade workstations are helping facilitate a new era of digital healthcare across the organization. “As we move forward with the implementation of enterprise EPR at SETRUST, the already high level of embedded technology that users know and operate with confidence, such as the dual screen medical carts, will give us a significant advantage in this ambitious programme of work,” said Sean Dooher, the Encompass programme manager. Customer Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum Location Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany Employees 3,200 Number of beds 1,000 Project Digital documentation and medication delivery improvements Featured products View All Ergotron StyleView® 42 Medical Carts, CareFit™ Slim LCD Carts
The Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum Villingen-Schwenningen is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Freiburg. With two locations, it is one of the largest healthcare systems in southern Baden-Württemberg. To accommodate new technology and digital documentation, they needed durable mobile medical carts that could fit into tight spaces and accommodate standard software. “When the new hospital building at the Villingen-Schwenningen site was planned 15 years ago, no one considered that digital workplaces could become necessary. Therefore, patient rooms only consist of a small work area, many cupboards and often a sink,” said Björn Bechtold, deputy director for IT and central project management and head of IT infrastructure. Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum looked to Ergotron’s portfolio to fit their needs. They began by implementing the StyleView 42 Medical Cart, which accommodated their standard IT hardware and accessories, like a scanner holder. “The CareFit Slim Medical Cart allowed us to implement a closed loop process to support accuracy and patient safety. Everything from ordering to providing the medication to administering the medication can now be documented and traced on the PC using barcodes.” ~ Björn BechtoldDeputy director for IT and central project management and head of IT infrastructure “That makes administration much easier than installing separate IT hardware that is only used for the medical cart,” Bechtold said. For digital documentation, users can adjust the height of the medical cart to type comfortably sitting or standing based on their personal preferences and body types. In addition to the fully equipped StyleView 42 Medical Cart, the hospital wanted to complement their fleet with an agile, space-saving solution. “We have had a very good experience with the SV42. Our oldest models are now almost 10 years old and still in use. Anyone who is familiar with everyday clinical life knows that this speaks to their robustness. That’s why we once again looked to Ergotron for a more compact medical cart,” Bechtold explained. Together with the partner IT service provider, they also found what they were looking for at Ergotron. They selected the CareFit Slim LCD Cart as a compact option for preparing medication. The cart supports a closed loop process where everything from the order to the provision of the medication to the administration can be documented on the PC and traced using barcodes. This process supports accurate and efficient medication administration for both caregivers and patients. While the CareFit Slim LCD Cart is half as deep as the StyleView 42 Medical Cart, the team recognizes it’s just as robust. “The quality is comparable to the SV42,” Bechtold said. “We are convinced of the durability of the medical cart.” Both carts support infection control with easy-to-clean designs that include worksurfaces and cables that can be wiped and disinfected. With access to the Ergotron medical carts, Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum caregivers can work to meet the German hospital digitalization requirements while supporting the best patient care. Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum remains in close contact with Ergotron to ensure they have the right equipment to meet the requirements both now and in the future. The emergency department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was built in the 1970s to accommodate 50,000 patients annually. Now clinicians are treating more than 100,000 patients per year—many with complex conditions and care needs. The organization decided to invest in a new, £27m Urgent and Emergency Care Development to address those changing needs and to create a more efficient and quality-focused patient experience. As part of the process, they needed to implement new workstations. “With changing requirements in healthcare, limits on a clinician’s time, and pressures on workforce, we need to work more efficiently and closer with our patients,” said Anthony Kenny, the site’s program director. “The flexibility they offer in position and height is fantastic while maintaining their robustness at the core. CareFit Combo System looks and feels high-quality and well-designed—so rare in NHS!” ~ Katherine LendrumMD, Emergency Department Clinical Lead In the current emergency department, clinicians roll mobile medical carts between rooms or return to a central desk space to complete electronic patient records (EPR). This creates extra steps for clinicians and reduces time spent with patients. With the new design, they needed a workstation that could: Support efficient documentation within the clinical bays Comply with infection prevention control standards Easily move to face the patient or stow when not in use Accommodate paper notes and a keyboard to update the EPR Chesterfield Royal Hospital clinicians tested multiple wall workstations, and the response was overwhelmingly positive for Ergotron’s CareFit Combo System with Worksurface. They gave the wall workstation high marks for its ergonomic design, cleanability and easy maneuverability. “The equipment looks robust and professional,” Mr. Kenny said. “It adds an air of quality to the new build that is not common among NHS departments.” Hospital leadership also called out CareFit Combo System’s durability to withstand the high traffic care area and the flexibility to meet the unique ergonomic needs of each user. “The flexibility they offer in position and height is fantastic while maintaining their robustness at the core. CareFit Combo System looks and feels high-quality and well-designed—so rare in NHS!” said Katherine Lendrum, MD, emergency department clinical lead. Now with CareFit Combo System in place throughout the new Urgent and Emergency Care Development, clinicians at Chesterfield Royal Hospital are ready to provide quality and efficient care when patients need it most.
