Championing the mantra “Exercise Everywhere,” the Minnesota office of the American Diabetes Association is taking an innovative approach to promoting employee wellness and physical activity in the office by installing Ergotron WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstations for interested staff and volunteers/interns.
“Our focus is always on increasing physical activity as a tool for preventing and managing diabetes,” said Jenni Hargraves, Executive Director, Minnesota office of the American Diabetes Association. “So, it only made sense for us to try out ways for employees to change the dynamics of their ‘computer time’ in the office and stay active.”
A major cause of heart disease and stroke, diabetes is a leading cause of death in the United States. The American Diabetes Association estimates that there are nearly 26 million living with diabetes, 7 million undiagnosed cases of diabetes and 79 million individuals living in a pre-diabetic condition (higher than normal blood glucose levels but not high enough to be diagnosed) in the United States.
“There is a strong correlation between extended periods of sitting, especially for computer workers, and the associated impact of conditions such as diabetes,” said Jane Payfer, Chief Marketing Officer of Ergotron. “By offering access to sit-stand computing options, the American Diabetes Association is creating an environment that promotes and supports optimum wellness and an active work style.”
According to the medical community, office workers who spend prolonged periods of time sitting (more than 6.5 hours a day) have an increased risk of developing diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease. An important element in preventing and managing diabetes and other conditions, office workers are urged to increase physical activity—at their workstation. The act of standing burns more calories than sitting, helps ramp up metabolism, tones muscles, improves focus, energy levels and more. Recent studies have found that the physical activity associated with standing (rather than sitting) can reduce the risk of diabetes and other disease conditions for the majority of individuals.
“Everywhere I go, I talk with people about making changes and getting active,” said Janeece Oatman, Associate Director, Minnesota Area. “Even little things go a long way to improve how you feel.”
Because of the Association’s focus on promoting physical activity, the adoption of sit-stand workstations was a “no-brainer” for the employees in the program. For Oatman, the hours at the computer left her with knots in her neck and posture problems as well as wrist pain. After using the Ergotron WorkFit Sit-Stand Workstation for a brief period, she was “amazed at how a simple solution like standing to work relieved my pains and made me feel more energized.”
Oatman’s co-worker Carol Holten shared a similar sentiment. For her, the psychological benefit of standing extends beyond her time at the office, “I definitely feel more energetic and focused when I am standing. And at night when I’m sitting, I don’t feel so bad knowing that I wasn’t sitting all day at the office.”
Promoting awareness is a part of the American Diabetes Association, and by adopting sit-stand computing, the Minnesota office will be able to report firsthand, the impact sit-stand computing has on increasing activity in an otherwise sedentary workday. Ergotron is a sponsor of the Minnesota American Diabetes Association and individuals in pre-diabetic or a diabetic condition will have the chance to learn about sit-stand computing at upcoming events throughout the 2012 calendar.
