California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)

Pre-approval Number OPA-0620

In response to the 1971 Sylmar earthquake—which caused several hospitals to collapse, endangering the lives of their patients and hampering their ability to provide emergency care to the injured—the State of California passed the Alfred E. Alquist Hospital Seismic Safety Act. Since 1973, all hospital construction has been governed by this legislation. The act preempts local building departments to ensure statewide uniformity in healthcare facility construction. The standards should ensure:

  • Patient safety during an earthquake
  • Functioning facilities which can care for injured people after earthquakes

To that end, the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of construction for general acute care, and psychiatric hospitals, as well as multi-story skilled nursing homes and intermediate care facilities in California.

In compliance with standards established for the anchorage and installation of instrument support systems by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), Ergotron, Inc. has obtained pre-approval for four Wall Track mounting methods and two 9" Vertical Lift mounting methods. Our pre-approval number is OPA-0620 as listed on the OSHPD Pre-approval Index. These mounting methods are limited to the components, documented in the OSHPD Mounting User Guides listed at the end of this page, on the following types of walls:

Pre-approved Mounting Methods
Ergotron Product Configuration Wall Type
Wall Track:
  • Light Gauge Metal Stud Walls (24 gauge minimum)
  • Wood Stud Walls (#2 Hem Fir, Douglas Fir or better)
  • Concrete Walls
  • Grouted Hollow Unit Masonry
Vertical Lift:
  • Light Gauge Metal Stud Walls (24 gauge minimum)
  • Wood Stud Walls (#2 Hem Fir, Douglas Fir or better)

The Engineer of Record must verify the wall design using the forces specified in CBC Section 1632A. Most instrumentation weighs well below the maximum load ratings. It is impractical to attempt to meet specific load requirements based on given weights of various instruments and the potential for changing instruments. Consequently, all installations must meet the maximum load ratings. The design of the wall studs is by the engineer of record. Inspection of the anchorage by OSHPD is required prior to the installation of the mount system. Compliance with these written instructions is required for the installation of the system.
